I am going to resign from the company. Can I join an individual-type DC (iDeCo) before finding a new employer?

Answer

Even if you do not work or you do not find a new employer, you can open an individual-type DC (iDeCo) account. There are requirements if you want to make contributions to iDeCo as a participant.

Under an individual-type DC (iDeCo), those who fall under the following 4 insured categories are eligible to make contributions.
(1) Category I insured persons
Those who pay the National Pension premiums only
(2) Category II insured persons
Those who are insured by the Employees' Pension Insurance (e.g., company employees)
(3) Category II insured persons (Mutual Aid Association members)
Members of Mutual Aid Association (e.g., public servants, school teachers and employees)
(4) Category III Insured Persons
Dependent spouses of Category II insured persons (including Mutual Aid Association members)
(5) Voluntarily participating insured persons
Those who are aged 60 or over but less than 65 and are voluntarily enrolled in the National Pension due to insufficient premiums to receive the full amount of the Old-age Basic Pension
Overseas residents who are aged 20 or over but less than 65 and are voluntarily enrolled in the National Pension

Please note that the following persons are not eligible to become participants. (They can keep an iDeCo account as a investment instructor (no contributions are allowed).
・Those who are exempted from the National Pension premiums (including partial exemption) or those who have been granted payment suspension (excluding recipients of disability basic pension).
・Those who are enrolled in the Farmers’ Pension
・Those who are not eligible for the National Pension due to moving overseas, etc.
